31-year-old housewife, arrested for pouring hot water on lady

For pouring hot water on the face and breast of a single lady over minor disagreement, a 31-year-old house wife, Mrs Chioma Uka, has been arraigned before an Abuja Area Court. The incident, which took place in the Jabi area of the FCT and still a shock to many residents of the compound, has left the victim…

Miss Ifeoma Chika, in a critical condition at the hospital. When the matter came up for hearing, Mr Austin Ogbuabia, counsel to Mrs. Uka filed an oral application for bail before the court, after the accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.

The counsel argued that an accused was still innocent until proven guilty. He pleaded with the court to grant his client bail saying “she is a housewife and nursing mother and will not jump bail.”

But on his part, the Police Prosecutor, Sgt. Phillip Appollos, strongly opposed the bail application because “the case is still under investigation and the offence is a serious one.” He further informed the court that ”the victim is still lying critically ill in the hospital. She is unable to appear in court and the investigating Police officer is yet to obtain a word from her.”

Sgt Appollos prayed the court for an adjournment to enable the police complete investigation in the case. The judge, Mr Abdul Mohammed, thus adjourned the case to December 12, for ruling on the bail application.

The offence allegedly committed by Mrs. Uka is contrary to Section 247 of the Penal Code Law
