A couple’s honeymoon ended in tragedy after the groom fell 30 metres to his death during a walk near their hotel in Portugal.Brian Orton, 45, slipped and fell 30 metres from a cliff in Albuefeira, Portugal and suffered head injuries.He was only six days into the romantic break with his new wife Catherine when tragedy struckThe couple from Coundon, in County Durham, had celebrated their wedding on the same day as Brian’s birthday on June 21.
‘You think it will never happen to you,’ said Mrs Orton. ‘It was a tragic accident and I still expect him to walk through the door. It has come as a massive shock, I really miss him.
‘He was such a nice guy and would do anything for anyone. I do not know anyone who has ever had a bad word to say about himThe couple, who had been friends since childhood, married at the Park Head Hotel in front of around 25 family and friends.They set off on their honeymoon on Monday June 25.
However just six days later, on July 1, Mr Orton apparently slipped and fell as they rushed up a steep path next to an open-air escalator.‘I was in front of him and when I turned around he had disappeared,’ said Mrs Orton ‘I do not know whether he slipped off the path or the escalator.
‘I did not want to see what had happened to him, so I rushed back to the hotel and told them where he had gone missing and they went to find him for me.‘They found his body about an hour and a half later.‘I went to see him when we got back to England, I gave him a kiss goodnight.
‘We were having a lot of fun and it had been a really romantic holiday. We would walk along the beach together.Mr Orton, a gas engineer, is remembered as a ‘happy-go-lucky’ man, who loved playing golf, snooker and darts.However his widowed bride says that his biggest passion was their beloved dog, Bronson.
