Govt rescues 497 abandoned babies

The Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Youth and Social Development, Dr. Dolapo Badru, says 497 abandoned babies were rescued from the streets by the government officials.
The Special Adviser stated this on Tuesday at the news conference by the Ministry of Youth and Social Development.

He said, “The babies were rescued at different sites, which made it obvious that their mothers did not want them.“We took them to homes and orphanages.”Badru also added that 82 children had been released for adoption after investigations and careful scrutiny of the foster parents.

He said, “We take adoption seriously because a child requires home in a loving environment.”
He added that the state had received 753 applications from prospective adopters out of which 709 were within the country and 24 were outside the country.

Badru said, “This office also registers and monitors the activities of orphanage homes and related non-governmental organisations. From June 2011 till date, 308 letters of approval had been granted.”

The special adviser added that the state was discussing with countries like France, United States of America, United Kingdom and Germany among others on the possibility of securing international adoption for children with medical challenges.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner for the ministry, Mr. Wahid Oshodi, said the state was ready for the 18th National Sport Festival scheduled for November.

He said the state had also been training its athletes to ensure they perform well.

Oshodi added that works on Teslim, Agege, Onikan stadia and other facilities to host the festival were near completion.-punch
