The court has ruled that Bankole and his deputy Bayero Nafada have no case to answer in the N40billion misappropriation charge leveled against them.
The full report from Punch:
A Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday said a former Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dimeji Bankole, and his erstwhile deputy, Bayero Nafada, had no case to answer in connection with a N40 billion misapropriation charge.
Justice Suleiman Belgore gave the verdict while ruling on a no-case submission made by Bankole and Nafada over a 17-count charge of criminal breach of public trust preferred against them by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
Both men were accused of having approved loans that were not captured in the 2010 Appropriation Act.
On Monday, their lawyers had asked the court to discontinue the trial and discharge and acquit them on the grounds that the prosecution did not provide ample evidence to justify the trial.
However, the prosecuting counsel, Festus Keyamo, had countered the submission of the defence and insisted that they breached extant financial regulations when they resolved to take loans to pay members’ enhanced allowances.
