Mexico: Peacocks,Fighting cocks, Prostitutes and pot found in raid on jail

A surprise search at a prison in Mexico has uncovered two peacocks, 100 fighting cocks, 19 prostitutes and two sacks filled with marijuana.

Police in the Mexican resort city of Acapulco also found dozens of televisions, several bottles of alcohol and knives, as well as six female prisoners in the men's section of the jail.

The discovery was made as 500 federal officers prepared to transfer 60 inmates to maximum security prisons.

Arturo Martinez, spokesman for federal anti-drug operations in the western state of Guerrero, said the search was part of a dawn raid on Monday but did not disclose how the women, birds and other objects found their way into the prison.
The city has been plagued by crime since last year when gangs began fighting for control after the arrest of Edgar Valdez Villarreal, also known as La Barbie.
Guerrero state has the third highest rate of murders in Mexico after the northern border states of Chihuahua and Nuevo Leon. In the first nine months of 2011 some 1,348 people were reported murdered.

Mexico's overcrowded jails are rife with corruption and see frequent violence including riots, killings and breakouts.
