The first-time mother, from the Nellore district of southern India, suffers from the most common type of dwarfism, achondroplasia.Standing proudly beside her husband, 18-year-old paint shop worker Srinivasulu, Kamakshi cradled her as yet unnamed daughter in Narayana Hospital in Chintareddypalem.
'She came to the hospital when she was two-months pregnant,' explained Dr Kallki Hymavathi, the hospital's head of gynaecology.
'We had to monitor her health very carefully because of her abnormal physical features.
'In such cases, only one in 40,000 women become pregnant, but delivering a baby is extremely rare
'Such women would suffer a miscarriage within two to three months as the mother's condition will not allow the growth of the foetus.'
Doctors at the hospital found no immediate health problems or sign of abnormalities in the baby, who was born prematurely.Dr Hymavathi said: 'It is rare for achondroplasia sufferers to conceive and when they do the pregnancy does not last long because of the uterus size.
'Kamakshi is 108cm tall. According to medical records, there have been two such previous instances where women who delivered were 109cm and 112cm tall.'
