The traditional ruler of Ogbogoro community in Bayelsa, the Ebeni Ibe of Atissa Kingdom, King Godwin Igodo, was on Thursday night kidnapped by unknown gunmen.
Igodo, who is the traditional ruler of Atissa clan, was abducted when he was relaxing at his palace at about 9.30 p.m.The abduction of the monarch threw the serene riverside settlement of Ogbogoro on the Nun River in the Yenagoa council area of Bayelsa into confusion.
The 70-year old first class monarch was abducted from his palace by armed gunmen who stormed the serene community in two speedboats.
A community source told Sahara Reporters on Friday that the assailants stormed the community waterfront shot into the air to scare away any possible resistance from the natives before successfully making way to the monarch’s palace. They were said to have gone to the residence of the monarch and abducted him into their getaway boat before disappearing into the creeks.
One of his subjects, who pleaded anonymity, said that the abduction of their monarch is similar to the kidnap of the monarch of Ogboin Kingdom, King Oweipa Jones-Ere of Amassoma, on the first week of June, 2011 in neighbouring Rivers State.
The kidnappers have yet to establish contact with the Monarch’s family and no group had claimed responsibility of the act.
When contacted, the state Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eguaveon Emokpai confirmed the incident in a telephone discussion, saying the police had already visited the community to gather first hand information that would assist them in trailing the hoodlums.“We are on top of the situation in order to rescue the aging monarch from the yet to be identified gunmen.” Emokpae said
