The Ghana Football Association say they hope Michael Essien will not be ruled out for too long as he battles to save his career after another knee injury.
The Ghana international midfielder is having further tests on his injured knee to ascertain the extent of damage after an injury in training this week.
It's an injury that could potentially damage his participation in the new season and affect his availability for Ghana at the 2012 Nations Cup but the GFA is hopeful he will be back sooner rather than later.
"The GFA and Ghanaians express their sympathy to Michael Essien in this difficult time and remain hopeful that, further tests would not rule him out for long," a GFA statement read.
"We stand by him and wish him a full and speedy recovery. The GFA is going to follow his progress closely to have news of his recovery."
Essien has had a wretched record with injury lately. He was ruled out for more than six months in 2008 when he sustained cruciate ligament damage on international duty in Libya.
The 28-year old also missed the 2010 World Cup because of a knee problem.
