TEAM Nigeria's powerlifter, Yakubu Adesokan yesterday at ExCel, London, England won the gold and set World record crashing with his amazing 180 kg lift in the men’s 48 category.Adesokan was a full 10kg ahead of silver medallist Vladimir Balynedc of Russia, while Taha Abdelmagid of Egypt claimed bronze with his 165kg effort.Adesokan told source he was full of optimism ahead of the lift.
''I am the world champion and I knew what was expected of me. Nigerians pinned hope on us and I am sure they were with me and Team Nigeria to the Paralympics. Otherwise, the event would not have been easy as I found it. Tell Nigerians to expect more from us,'' said the athlete called 'Agbara Po'' (the powerful one).
Meanwhile, chef de mission, Solomon Ebhojaiye told Team Nigeria that the opening day gold was a challenge to the others.''We know what Yakubu can do and we expect others to follow suit,'' he told Tribunesports in London.'We look forward to other world beaters among us to prove themselves
